Why Every Farmer Should Be Online (And How to Start Simple)

Let us be honest. Farming is hard work already. The unpredictable weather, fluctuating profits, there is already enough on our plates. So when someone says, “You need to be online,” it might sound like just another thing to worry about.

But here is the truth: being online is not just for techies or big companies. Even small farmers (yes, like you and me) can benefit in a big way — and it does not have to be complicated.

Let me break it down.

1. People Buy with Their Eyes

Nowadays, people want to see what they are buying. If you are selling eggs, mushrooms, vegetables, or even chicken, one good photo posted on WhatsApp or Facebook can lead to real buyers. It is not about having a fancy camera — even your phone can do the job. Clean the product, take a clear photo in daylight, and just write the price.

That is it.

No website? No problem. Just your photo, a short message, and your number.

2. Word Spreads Faster Online

Let us say you just harvested something fresh. You can tell 5 people by SMS or word of mouth… or you can post it once on WhatsApp Status or a Facebook group, and 50 people will see it in an hour. You never know who is watching — a restaurant owner, a friend of a friend, or someone nearby who has been looking for exactly what you have.

Being online helps your name move.

3. Trust Builds with Consistency

When you keep showing up — posting your farm activities, behind-the-scenes photos, what you are planting or feeding your chickens — people start trusting you. They say, “This one is serious.”

You are not just a seller anymore. You are a brand.
Even if it’s just called “Mama Njeri Eggs” or “Kiserian Mushrooms.” That is branding already.

4. You Learn Faster Online

The internet is like a farming library. You can join farmer WhatsApp groups, follow agricultural pages, watch YouTube tutorials on things like irrigation, or mushroom growing. Some of the best tips I have learned have come from Facebook comments!

Being online is not just about selling. It is also about learning.

So How Do You Start?

  • Use WhatsApp Status to show your farm or products
  • Join 1–2 farming or marketplace groups on Facebook
  • Post your product photo and price
  • Add your phone number. People will call or message.
  • Reply politely. Build relationships.
